I mean there is a guy restoring an 84 318 in the e30 section. To me that's nuts.

That's me - thanks
Everything and anything is worth paying for it if you really want it - people pay up to $10000 for Apple I. The main thing is to enjoy yourself doing what you like doing.
Also please remember that e30 was a very popular car across Europe and it was not an expensive car. As to becoming collectible, In Europe E21 is more desirable than e30.

Asking anyone who willingly owns a 17 year old Range Rover for their opinion on the value of a car isn't going to get logical thoughts.

I could say the same about a 17 year old BMW/VW/Benz, etc.
ITs all a personal choice. I could say that you are crazy for trying to preserve an e30 over an e36 M3.
But yes, willingly owning a RR is a little masochistic. I am strange like that, and don't regret it.

You don't need to defend your ideals and feelings. You enjoy your project and it is worth it to you.
That's all that matters, just like I enjoy my project a million times more than I ever did my e30. Its just the old saying "Different strokes, for different folks."
I am actually follwoing your thread as I think it's neat.

Sometimes when you look up a word in a dictionary, you may get only one of the many uses for the word.
Here I will help you out.
From dictionary.com
"gratification gained from pain, deprivation, degradation, etc., inflicted or imposed on oneself, either as a result of one's own actions or the actions of others, esp. the tendency to seek this form of gratification
