I've heard of people running the e30 M3 aluminum control arms... I'm not sure if they are M specific though

Same shit. Supposedly E36 have removable outer ball joints which E30 ones don't have but that has nothing to do with geometry. People use M3 arms because the arms are aluminum and people think it makes some difference in the lap times of their world championship races around the block.

Ya, they are indeed the same. As per BigDs post. I've put the E30 control arms on my E36 325 in the past and they fit fine.
