2000 323ci

I need a daily driver. Despite how much i love my e36, its getting a little old, and although i'm not getting rid of it, it needs a companion in the driveway.

I want a 2000 323ci. Why? 323 has cheapest insurance, best gas mileage, cheapest to buy, etc.

Who's owned one?

What are the problems?

I do not need generic answers such as elecrtical problems suck. The general consensus seems to be that the sunroof sucks, and that there's problems with the light wiring. My e36 has sunroof problems, i'm used to it, and light wiring issues i'll fix myself.

Please let me know what's up with these cars.

I'll be buying a 5spd black or silver one from the states.

This car may be getting lowered (a bit), will get clears all around and tints + lighting. No other mods are planned.

Nothing than the other generic problems on E46s that you have already mentioned (ie. sunroof, window regulators, A-pillar trim falling, etc.). My buddy just bought one in August (170,000kms). He loves it, although he misses the kick that his E36 325 had.

The only thing he had to do was a ABS sensor problem.

edit: Oh, and don't forget to have the subframe checked! I hear it's worse on the 2000 model year E46s.

Best of luck with your hunt! I love E46 coupes.

sun roof problem - fixed myself (pretty fun DIY)

no sub frame dmg nor window regulator

insurance - e90 328 and e46 323 had exact same quote for me.. so can't assume they have cheapest insurance

gas mileage - well 323 has 2500cc engine. I don't think e36 325 has more hp or torque. old engine = bad gas mileage

My e46 323 gives me 9.8-9L/100km highway and city drive is almost 13-14L/100km (or more)

If you care about all these I think 320 is the answer.

My lil 323ci is an okay car, be on the look out for subframe tears (front & rear), fan blower motor issues, door lock actuators, falling door seals, O2 sensors, Cam position sensors, typical BMW stuff I guess, it is great on gas and there are a few on Fanatics w/over 400,0000km

Thanks for the input guys. Would any of you guys take me for a spin in your car?

Vsanj, they go for about 8-9K USD, i'm hoping to have one in canada for about 10.5K without taxes,

Boxcarracer, your car looks mint, and is almost exactly what i'm looking for. Unfortunately, the price difference between canadian and american cars forces me to shop in the states.
Summit425 -> i would get a 320, but i dont want another sedan.

I do! I'll definately take you up on that. Is his car auto or 5spd? It was sport package correct? (The black coupe, right?)

Yes, black coupe. Sadly it's auto, but you get the jist of it. Not sure if it has the sport pkg. I'll check the seats, lol.

Ivan, my mom's been dailying a 2000 323i for 6 years now, it's been very reliable. She got it at 33k and it now has 138k I think, only had a couple issues (Vanos problem, 1 window regulator, 1 ignition coil boot, 1 tie rod end). For 100k+ of driving, that's incredible to me.

It's a manual with the sport package, so the same stuff as the coupe. Call me up, we'll chill in the hood.

Oh jay I never knew your family got a whole stable of BMWs, i guess you gave them the bug, haha the bug that keeps on giving is it?

My sister got a e46 too, I dunno, I don't like them at all, I dunno about you Ivan but after driving one I was so much happier to get into my e36. I'm sure Jay knows what I'm talking about

Haha yeah, we have 3 now. Neighbours think we're friggin nuts. And I didn't start it, my dad did with the E30 back in '90.

The E46 is a pretty dead car, it's not really all that fun to drive (especially the 323/328...the later M54 models sound a lot better). But what it is good at is being very quiet, comfortable, reliable, and still very capable handling wise for the occasional run. It's a great daily, but I'd need another car to drive for fun (like Ivan is planning to do).

Ahhhh 90's, what an awesome time, when the e34 was the coolest car on the block

I hear you on the dead car part. I agree 100%, it's a car for women or for seniors IMO.

But we are a different breed. We are car enthusiasts. I mean look at it this way: you are still young, strong etc. Why not get a car like a Honda S2000 or a Vette and boot around in that? haha...winter or no winter. Anyway that's my mentality. There's plenty of time when I'm 50 and with a family that I can enjoy my Starbucks and my heated steering wheel.

I know that my next car will either be a 2 seater or a 80's monster hehe or both
