replacing instrument cluster bulbs with brighter L.E.D bulbs
has any one tried this?

I know alot of VW mkIII guys messed with that, as mk4's were led's ...
so the info in generalities is out there...

I have converted my whole interior lighting to blue using leds. I'm currently running some led bulbs in the cluster as well

You have to use 194 5-led bulbs I believe, Dave correct me if im mistaken. You also can not go back once you do it because you have to acetone the back of the gauge's and this could be a lot of hours or it could be just a few. It took me a lot longer than it took Dave to acetone. It depends on the glue BMW used.

yup... #194 5 LED wide angle bulbs were used in the cluster. 3mm and 5mm LEDs everywhere else, sometimes with resistors depending on the application. I'll see if I can get some pics up...
