rear end question, thinair you might know

well ive offically started my s52 swap by beginning to remove my paperweight m42, im going to start a thread on it tomorrow. but anyways id like to know if rear diffs from e36s are direct bolt ons? i know alot of you use the 3.73 but what id like is for my car to be super quick on the streets, dont really care about highway, if my max is 140 kph in 5th at 3000rpm, im happy with that. what rear diff do i need?

Nope, e36 diffs wont bolt-on. If you're running the ZF transmission w/a 3.73 rear end you'll be very quick off the line but have retarded high rpms on the hwy. If you want it to get regular rpms you'll need a 3.46, or 3.25 diffs found in the old e24s (6 series) and e28s (5 series). A 2.whatever diff from a 325E would work too if you really want good mileage.

welll just to give you an idea,

with the m50 + getrag 260 + 3.73 at 140 km/h i'm at about 4000 RPM IIRC

and thats with the longer gearing

with an e36 tranny 5th gear would be like 4th in the getrag

What trans are you planning on using? The final ratios are really different.
Most find an LSD from an e28, e24, e23 etc.

Nope. 3740rpm by my calculations.

So with an E36 transmission, 140km/h and stock sized tires would be 4549rpm. Jesus.

If it makes you feel better, Zimmie will hit his rev limiter in 5th at 193km/h and Jon at 198km/h. I say we race the Bimmersport boys, starting at 160.
