Freeing up HP on 1.9 L (M44)

What are some good ways to give my sluggish 318, some slightly better acceleration? Aside from maintenance items, what can I add/change or delete that could free up some power for my car?

Will a cold air intake make any difference, or are most results companies advertise about their products exaggerated?

best honest answer .....

elctrical contact cleaner to every sensor/meter you can get at.
wipe down the throttle body butter fly ...
all of the above will be diiirty if you've never cleaned em ever

listen for vacuume leaks (hissing), check ignition for arcing:
mist water on wires while running, at night. sparcs are bad
proper tire pressure. does your car roll back on hills (dragging brakes, wheel bearings)?

cones make nice noises, but air is everywhere

dasc s/c ? a good cone intake kit could be 1/3 of the cost (in some cases) of a basic Nitrous setup.

cai, exhaust and not sure if they sell performance chips for the 318, but that would be your best bet.

I reprogrammed the car with Dinan software. It made a difference at highway speeds. CAI only makes it sound more aggressive.

Don't waste your money.
If you want performance the only thing you can do to increase the power is turbo or supercharger.

Gearing, upgrade the diff to a 3:91.
Intake on the M44 is especialy restricted.
Make the intake 3"+ will free up the the restricted air till about 4G's.
Then the restrictive exhaust get's in your way.
Do intake and exhaust together and your new power band is 3500+ till redline .
CAI kits are rip offs IMO, dremel to the stock airbox is way cheaper, easier and not even ugly after.
+1 to the FI suggestion.

I used to use stock air box with a added 3" tube passing behind the headlight towards the fender & down the space their leading to the wheel skirt, matched with a Stromung cat back, worked great.
Now I use a SC with the same exhaust, this setup works even better .

supercharger. Anything other then that would be just throwing money out the window.
