Question A/C Noise level ?

The noise level under my hood goes up significantly when the air is runnig (even on the smallest setting).
Since I'm the 2nd owner and can't compare to another 540, I was wondering if that's normal.
I'm still under warranty (it's a very late '03) and thought of mentioning this to my service adviser, but figured I would check here first (before I sound like a demanding fool).

When iddling, it's just the regular humming under the hood getting louder the moment I turn on the A/C.
My rpm's don't increase.....it just sounds like it...bothers me too.

Your aux fan goes on when you are idling and/or when ac is on.
its a loud mother.. if it gets really loud its a sign of clutch wear.

^

You mean the aux fan has a clutch that might be wearing ?
I'm having a tough time judging the degree of loudness, as I don't have another 540 to compare it to.

Yeah the fan clutch going at about 100k is fairly normal. Where are you lcoated there are some great shops all over GTA that you can take it in and compare the sound to other e39s... I compared my fan noise to m5 and 540 and mine was significantly louder...
Its a known issue and can be replaced by yourself if you are technically inclined and want to spend the time or you can take it in the shop.

If you have warranty... CPO or other ... they wont replace the fan on noise only... my experience with cpo is that cpo is not very usefull unless something "fails" thats actually covered.

- rust bubbling not covered.
- imminent mecnahical, electrical and other failures not covered.

And if you took your cpo in for a check and they found nothing youd have to pay the full diagnostics fee of 135 w taxes.

so if you have no warranty.. its good news.

You can take it in indy shops to get it checked.

Though for your rad/aux fan i woulndt worry too much until next summer or it gets progressively loud. Just keep an eye on it... there have been some HUGE disasters when the fan failed or failed to move etc etc.

Search on some other forums you will see plethora of info on it.
