The car drove well, but sometimes when at a complete stop it was a little tricky to get into first gear. I had to double clutch it, or go 2nd gear then into first.
Is this a sign of major $$$$ ? or somewhat normal?
I have a similar problem on my E46 M3 when cold. Seems to be a quirk of the transmission. However, once warmed up, shifts are smooth.
How long did you drive it for? Did it get better over time or did the problem remain after the car was warmed up?
I'd say that if you were driving the car for any longer than 15-20 minutes, the problem should have gone away, otherwise there may be tranny issues. Then again, when was the last time the tranny fluid was changed? That could also be a culprit.
It could be a problem with the shifter (worn bushings, short shift kit,...). It could also be a problem related to the clutch (slave cylinder) or even clutch pedal. But it could also be a bigger problem.
car has higher mileage - 220k... No the problem happened once warmed up. There is a bit of play in shifter, so maybe new bushings? the clutch seems fine... maybe slave though hmmm

Look at the slave cylinder, check for leaks. Check if your clutch pedal comes back all the way up. Also check the brake fluid level.
Is there a lot of left-right play in the shifter when you are in a gear?
