Mega-Miler 328 - what is it worth to you?

I might be buying a mega miler 99' 328i. What is it worth though?

1999 328i sedan
Silver on black
Loaded to the tits with premium pack, harman kardon, all options
5speed manual
330,000km highway

Car drives very smooth. Problem areas - original shocks /springs - very bouncy, original clutch, a/c a bit weak, Headlights badly 'fogged' from stone chips, umm, car overheats slightly in stop and go traffic (waterpump?)

Just need a ballpark of what this baby is worth. Would u even buy one wiht such high miles? It does drive like a car with half that mileage. and pretty much looks that way too - Drivers seat has no wear to bolster!

Dont Do it man, I know its a BMW and all, Yes Chicks will dig it and your neighbours will think your rich but that car is ****ing worthless and will be nothing but problems. Do you really want to be paying thousands of dollars to be repairing a car that has 300k on it?

Mechanics will also use it as an excuse for charging you more.

Well first off - i wont' be going to mechanics so no worries there, secondly the car drives great.

The body is very clean with maybe 2 dime size rust spots. Original paint. but 10 grand? I can buy a 2001 with half the mileage for that...

Anybody know what a fair price for this baby is?

Yeah 8-10 Grand is what your looking at, you wont find any e46's for cheaper. My buddy had an e46 with around 240k and got 8 grand when he traded it to the dealership..........THE DEALERSHIP!

well since its a 328...its still worth something, but i woudn;t pay more then 8 gs for it.

clutch will need to be replaced really soon (big investment) springs/shocks another investment A/C prob just recharge, maybe change all the o-rings,
i am sure it will need bushing and stuff like that too. overheating!!
that will be close to 2-3 gs
also those are the things that you noticed well taking the first test drive... if you buy this thing, in a week you will find more problems.

$7K max, you're in for $2-$3K in repairs.

..

i would stay away from this car. it doesnt matter if u work at a shop or not. BMW parts are expensive. If you really want to drive a bmw save up a bit more and buy one with no problems.

Highway driven cars are generally very good. It is like the car has about 1/2 to 3/4 of the actual mileage.

However, this is BMW, and will become a money pit.

Given that the struts are gone, ac might need work (perhaps just a recharge) and potential clutch replacement, $5K as is. Maybe $6K certified tops.

I still wouldn’t do it, even as a winter beater; you’ll have a hard time selling it afterwards. You can spend $6K better elsewhere.

There is a 99 with 150K KM going for $10K. You could probably pick that up for $9-$9.5K.

There was a 2001 323i for sale two months ago in Vaughan with 300,000km on it for $8,200

That being said that was the dealer's asking price. He probably paid $6500 for it. I was in the same boat as you 3 months ago... I had $12.5k to spend on a car and I wanted the most car for the money. Stay away from the high miler e46's (I mean over 250,000km). You can look at this two ways... It's like buying a new honda civic or a chevy cavalier. The honda is going to be a few thousand more out the door, but it's going to be reliable and you'll be glad you weren't a cheap shit and skimping out the door. The cavalier will allow you to have the few grand left in the bank, and you will be paying the thousands you saved in repairs. Now wouldn't you rather buy something that will be less problematic? Or would you rather waste your time being carless while little things are constantly being fixed on this car? If you have a backup car to use once a month while getting things fixed then go for it. Or you can do what I did and take your money and find a really nice clean late late model e36 328is or 325is with low km's and be able to sell it in a year or two for not much less than you paid for it (if you get a really good deal like I did). Who is going to want this car when your done with it when it has 420,000km on it? Sure it will feel smooth, it's not that old and the engines will run for years and years, but all the plastic cheap shit that breaks on them won't, and they are not cheap. I doubt if you're going to try and find a e46 for 7 grand you're going to be willing to shell out 6 hundred for brakes when they go, or $1000 for a new gauge cluster, or $300 for seatbelt sensors, or $400 for a water pump, etc. etc. or the $900 for a new power steering pump and line (these are just a few things that go on these) I am saying that because my mom has owned a '02 328i for 4 years now, and I have the bills to prove it and the posts on the internet for the problems these cars have. That being said my mom's car is 3 years newer, so the one in question is probably more likely to have something go wrong with it. This car sounds like the wheels haven't stopped moving since it rolled out of the plant. The A/C will cost you at least $500 to fix, (you're getting a bmw, so you're budget if you don't fix it). There is corrosion on the body, so what is the undercarriage like? Are you going to pay the $800 for a new exhaust which is probably rusted to shit now and the $650 for o2 sensors to turn the check engine light off? Or the $120 per oil change? Oh and the windshields are more fragile than Eric Lindros, so watch out for stones or there's another $900 for a rain sensing winshield. Anyways I don't mean to shit on your dream, but as you can see, you better have another 5-7 grand lying around for repairs for the next 15 months for repairs and a good job that doesn't mind you being away for servicing all the time. But I hope it works out for you!!!

good luck!!!

e30bim I appreciate your advice, and its good - if I was bending over to get raped at the dealer. But for example your quote of $600 for brakes, I can do for a little over $100 for the parts, and the labour is free so not really a ball breaker. ditto the other repairs.

but all this is speculation - tomrrow it will be reality when that titanium beauty is delivered to me

i pray to god it passes e-test! :O
