Erratic RPMs with AC on.

Problem occurs when A/C is ON

When completely letting off the throttle with A/C on, the revs hold for quite a few seconds before dropping really sharply to say 1K RPM or so, and then bounce back up to where they SHOULD be.

What is causing this? I have noticed that turning the A/C off eliminates this behavior. Input is appreciated.

Most e36's have minor hickups with the AC on. Mine boggs and hesitates, but it's not a serious problem. I'm pretty sure it's just a computer thing, nothing to worry about.

Its because you're placing a load on the engine quickly (AC Compressor) it usually does that on every car.

Hmm. Well I figured since my AC compressor makes such loud noises, something might be up. However, the weird thing is, this RPM "problem" is much more noticeable these days, dunno if that's just me or if it's actually gotten worse.

To me it sounds like your compressor is on its way out. Mine made loud noises before seizing.

Your condensor is ****ed. Mine is too. Been like that since last year. A/C still works fine though.

honestly, dont use A/C in the city. Your car is slow enough thanks to the auto tranny(lol, j/k).

On the highway, you wont notice the sound, and you'll get better gas mileage with the A/C on than the windows down, so crack the A/C up, turn the "recirculate air" button on, and enjoy the freezing cold air.

When it goes, you need a new condensor, they're not cheap

The RPM's aren't anything to worry about, the computer wont let the car stall out cause of A/C (at least it shouldn't, if it does something is really ****ed)

I figured it won't stall, but the weird "hanging" of the RPMs made me go wtf?

Also, is it condenser or compressor - or just two terms talking about the same component? And yeah, the noise it makes in city driving is so embarrassing lol. I usually leave it off thanks to that
