I was going to try mine this weekend, but I worked on my and wife's bikes instead. I'll take pics and give general impressions after I'm done.. However, on mine, I have a lot of play caused by something worn / broke, so it may be different. If yours is tight, I think you can just unhook the shifter linkage, pop out the old shifter, pop in the new one.. I heard about 30 mins to do.

hey everlast,

pls do post some info on your project, thanks. i've looked up the parts to the upgrade and the site i read up on lists the shift lever as-well as the nylon ball joint, washers clip and bushings etc. etc. are you going this far into detail or are you just swapping the arm?

oh yah my shifter now isn't tight. it's got a fair bit of give when it's in gear.

I have all the washers, clip, the nylon cup, etc, and a z3 1.9 arm. My shifter hits the console to go into reverse which is pretty common.

Well, that is 100% to do with the existing parts that are broke / worn.. Fix that first, then determine whether you need a short shifter or not, imo.

so does anyone have the complete parts list for the z3 1.9 conversion so i can compare it to mine. wanna get this done.

from what i've heard RMP motors can do the work. but does anyone know if they can provide the parts as-well.

thanks.

If you read any serious racing book, or talk to pros, they don't all believe in a short shifter anyway. The 1/10 (or less) of a second it saves you is totally lost if you miss one shift, which gets easier and easier to do as you give yourself less leverage. "Notchy" is bad, and could lead to missed shifts under tense situations.

its actually in this thread linkie

but ill give the list anyways
Z3 ? SSK
1x . . . 25 11 1 434 148 - Z3Shift lever - $43.81
4x . . . 25 11 1 220 439 - Spacer Rings (two extra)
1x . . . 25 11 1 220 832 - Rubber Bearing sleeve (could be replaced with UUC Delrin Bushings, this is one of the most important parts)
2x . . . 25 11 1 220 379 - Circlips $0.50 (one extra)
1x . . . 25 11 1 220 600 - Nylon Shift Bushing - $4.00

if you want to do more work you can replace also:
25.11.7.801.309 - Gearshift Rod Joint
which may require all or some of the following
23.41.1.466.134 - Dowel pin
07.11.9.932.863 - Circlip (x2)
25.11.1.221.243 - O-Ring (x2)
21.11.1.220.199 - Spacer ring
25.11.1.203.682 - Tension bushing

also, you could replace the bitch clip, since you might break it taking it off
25.11.1.221.849 - Bearing Bolt

Im going to do the z3 1.9 conversion on my car, with probably the uuc delrin bushings, and all of the above parts as well. (i have an iX, so i need the bent shift lever) ill update if it doesnt take too long to get everything together.

sick. thanks alot Fury. thats pretty close to what i got too. missing a few bits.

i'm actually not looking to race or build a race car. my shifter is just really loose, in and out of gear. when i searched for solutions on the forums the upgrade seemed to be the way to go. not overly expensive and i could reduce the length of the shift rod which was i was looking at too.

any other hints and tips are appreciated.

thanks very much.

Here's another link with part numbers:

http://www.bmwe30.net/cgi-bin/datacg...005&Section=11

Since you mentioned you have a sloppy shifter make sure you change all the bushings, clips, etc. I made the mistake of replacing just the shifter and not doing the carrier bushings also. The shift was much better after but there was still too much play.

I bought the UUC Delrin Carrier Bushings and will be installing them soon
