I've been feeding my two cats with their food for about 5 years now. Before that, I fed them Iams (they're both pretty old now - 13 & 12 yrs). The younger one ended up developing diabetes at about age 6 and had to have insulin shots everyday. After almost 2 years of giving him shots daily, I switched to Holistic Blend food on a co-workers recommendation.
One day, about 2 months after switching, he starts having seizures and pretty much crashes. Needless to say, my wife and I (slightly panicked) bring him to the vet where we find out his blood sugar level has totally bottomed out. Poor little guy ends up on an IV drip overnight and the vet immediately takes him off the insulin. We get sent home with instructions to hold off on giving him any shots unless it looks like his BSL is shooting up.
He hasn't had a shot of insulin since. We've been back to the vet several time since for checkups and his blood sugar levels are completely back to normal.
Both cats seem to really like the food and are pretty healthy and active considering their age. My only complaint is they now lay some stanky-ass dumps in the litter box. A small price to pay IMO for not having to jab a needle in one of my cats once a day.
My advice - take a good look at the ingredients in the food you're feeding your pets and shop around a little. You wouldn't believe the crap that goes into some of the food out there.
