Just got a bimmer

I just got a 1986 325es and need to know what kinda motor Oil is recommended for a high mileage engine? (181K miles)

Also is it the regular 4L of oil or is it different on Bimmers?

I'd use synth, even if it hasn't seen it and leaks a little more. Cnd Tire have a 4.4 + 1L of mobil one, 10w30 for ~$36. Your car takes 4.3L.

While I am a firm believer in synth, I personally wouldn't put it in a high millage e30, especially that thin a viscosity Jay, I would bet the valve stem seals would start leaking along with the rear main seal eventually, especially with mobil 1 since it tends to be a very high detergent oil. Just my thoughts.

My recommendation is Castrol GTX 20w50 for summer, 10w40 spring/fall, 5w30 Jan/Feb

But if you are going to use mobil 1 synth, I would use 0w-40 or 15w-40(in summer)

Castrol GTX high mileage is on sale.. I think $20 for a 4.4 Litre at Cambodian Tire.
