washer fluid problem...

ok..so to fix my washer problem yesterday (no spray)..i pulled the rubber part out of the side of the resevoir....i thought i got it back in right but by the time i got home i lost all my fluid so obviously i did not.

So..is there supposed to be some sort of sealant or does that rubber piece (that clips into the side of the resevoir) just fit snuggly down in the hole to suck up the fluid. did i just not get it in far enough or what? is there a trick to getting it in because i thought it was ok but its a pretty small area to work in...i think i might take the resevoir out to put that rubber back in properly if need be...any suggestions???
