E46 question

hey guys,

i'm an E36er... got an E36 cabriolet, but i have been thinking of selling and going to an E46 coupe.

quick question: can you guys fill me in on the differences in models for the E46. changes in the model years between different E46's and what the specs are for different engines.

specifically, i was wondering about the 323... what engine is that? i understand it is a 2.5 litre. is it the same as the 325? please explain.

thanks!

a 3.23 has 2.3l of engine alot of people believe dat 3.20s r 2.2l 3.23s r 2.5l but they arent..u can call the dealer and check..

if im not mistaking,
from 1999-2001 are the preface models
from 2002 and on are the facelifted models..

i would recommend u a 3.30ci. 330s are faster and stronger then the 3.25s and 3.23s. if urnt on a low budget go for a 330ci Zhp

I just jumped from an E36 to a E46. I don't think that you have to spend money on a ZHP but it's worth putting some extra change into an M package. Especially if the car is pre-facelift ... it looks much better. I don't think that you have to spend a lot of $$ to make a stock 330 faster than a ZHP. This is my opinion at least, correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh BTW, if you are currently driving a 328 then the jump is not worth it unless if you go for a 330 or M3 .

thats true.... all u need is shorter gears and ur set....500$ .... the zhp has a bit shorter gears thats why it's 0-60 time is .2 sec faster....

they are both nice... any 330 would do!!!!!!

ya, i'm not in the budget range for a 330

i need an early-model E46... i'm thinking maybe a 2000 E46 328 5-spd coupe... keep in mind i'm coming from a 318 automatic, and my goal is not speed. i don't drive like a maniac or race or go to the track or anything like that.

can someone explain what was changed on the facelift for the coupes plz.

The E46 sedan underwent a facelift for 2002, which included redesigned headlights, new bumpers and a stiffer chassis... Then in 2004 the coupe had a facelift which included new headlights, new fenders and bumpers, new selections in exterior color, and redesigned sidemarker lights and taillights

I just took the plunge and bought a 2001 330ci to replace my 1993 318is. It is a huge difference in terms of handling, performance, and comfort.

Comfort - As both coupes with sport package, I think it's a fair assessments to say it is a lot more comfortable in the 330, but I find that space is more limited in the 330. Also, visibility is my main complaint - I can hardly see out of the 330, especially in comparison with the 318 that had next to no blind spots. (HK= WAY BETTER SOUND)

Performance - I would suggest getting a 323 with sports over a 325 if there is a significant difference in price - with very little modifications a 323 can pull on a 325 (it's a very underated engine).

Handling - This is another complaint I have. 01 and 02 330s have a lighter steering rack (arguably for fairies who buy these cars for status) and don't have the same steering feel. I really like the capabilities in terms of handlings and the predictability and traction of the car, but get a 99-00 328 if you want the legendary rigid steering feel (assuming 03+ cars are out of your budget). It is a cheap fix with swaping out the rack (ie $800ish) but it's a PITA.

I can't really argue on reliability because I've only owned this car for about a week or so, and the appearance factor is a personal preference - not about to get flamed for arguing e46s looks better (which they do! )

Well that's a basic breakdown from a personal point of view. There's a lot of other differences, but these are the main things I have noticed making the change from the same car you own now.

Forgot to add - 01 330s are not far off the price of a 325/328i. Granted I have higher mileage than most, but I only paid $18 for mine - sport/prem, 140k, perfect condition.

I would also love to go ZHP, but it's a significant price difference, and the next jump will be an M.
