Good budget drifters are Jap......
- 240sx's (early ones are DIRT cheap, but as a result of the price, its almost IMPOSSIBLE to find one that doesn't have a rotted frame). If your handy with welding, this would be a perfect car.
- RX 7's Older (secong gen) are nice little cars, although some people complain about drifting these, its cause they have such a nice ballance to them (almost 50/50 i think) so its similar handling characteristics to BMW's.
- Corolla's are awesome little cars, don't get me wrong, i loved mine while i had it, such badass little cars but they're completely gutless. My buddy's ZC bubbleback rapped mine. And my corolla only had an original 150k on it.
Heres the thing though........ DRIFTING IS NOT CHEAP. If you really wanna try out drifting it doesn't really matter if you have a bmw, nissan, etc. Cause the parts that your gonna break drifting (engine, diff, rear suspension, etc.) are all more or less priced the same. People think they can get cheap drifters but its not gonna happen. I thought the same way when i bought my Corolla. Then i started lookin into parts and it was MORE than my BMW. First and foremost, you NEED an LSD (you don't need one, but wheres the fun in drifting an open diff?). Check out LSD for all these budget jap cars on EBAY. First off, it was almost impossible to find an OEM LSD for my AE86, since they never came with LSD in canada (only JDM and SOME US). So when i found some for sale, they were $800+ for used OEM ones. If you go aftermarket, its even worse, although you get much better performance, the cost is 1g MINNIMUM. Check out all this stuff on ebay or around the net.... you'll be surprised. Also, with the corolla, or RX 7... engine swaps are a MUST and if you want power they're not cheap.
Your BEST bet would be to find cheap 240sx, weld the frame if you have to (more than likely you will) throw in an SR20DET, they drop right in with next to no modification. And all 91 240's came with LSD (but it wasn't a clutch type like BMW's... so they wear out easily).
But still, for a decent 240 drifter i'd say you'll have to spend 4-7g's ontop of the vehicle price.
Check out the for sale section at www.son240sx.ca
they usually have cheap cars on there, and a LOTTTT of hot shot (wannabe) drifters on that site that can help you out!
P.S. Please just admit that you should have never sold your Turbo BM, cause that car had the power/looks/handling and coulda drifted with STYLE!!
