How do you know you need an engine rebuild?? Where did you take your car to? Did you go to Bavarian Motors? They know these cars inside out.
Give me some more info on your situation and why you need a rebuild. If infact you do need a rebuild, you will surely spend more than $5000 CAD

If you plan on selling the car,you could probably get $5-$7000 with no engine.

You know, if I was you I would hold out and wait for maybe a new engine, like a 2.8 L or an M3 engine (3.2L). With those, your car can really fly, but you would be looking at spending a bit more cash.

That sucks lee, i dont know what you should do. An M50 engine would be cool, but you have an M car iMO you need an M engine togo with it. A newer M engine will cost big bucks prollie over 10 g's
what about rebuilding it with evo parts?

Um you mean the 3.0L S50 and 3.2L S52?

Well if you can't find any in Toronto, you could always check autoactivewerk's web site or Tuner's site. Sometimes they post some used engines there.

I've got this feeling that in 10years times, anyone who plans to buy even an E36 that's originally not a M car will have a dropped in M engine. heh. Oh well better for me when I make a purchase

My bad, but I was referring to the US spec engines.
From my understanding I'm used to referring it to
S50US/B30 = US 3.0L
S50/B30 = Euro 3.0L
S52US/B32 = US 3.2L
S52/B32 = Euro 3.2L

Just that some ppl. refer it to that and found it a long time ago from the bmwregistry site.

Oh well just trying to clarify. Eitherway go with the US spec, you'll save yourself some money, even though the Euro specs produce more cc than the US spec b/c of the internal components and what not.

i know this might be considered sacrilege, but you might have good results putting a regular M50 engine in the car. Maybe a E36 325 or 328 engine.
The upside to that would be that you can get a newer engine, and parts are readily available and probably less expensive.
it would be nice to put another ///M engine in there, but that would also cost alot more...about $10,000 probably
