quick questions while l'm at sckool

if you drop the m30 engine in a e30, how would this be in a e30, l would like do a swap of some sort some time soon, l was thinking about the s52 or the LS1 Vett engine,

would the m30 engine be ceaper or the same,?

It would be vastly different, the m30 weighs a few lbs more than the m20 but puts out 220HP. You will loose that extra weight by doing some parts elimination. It gains the most performance from Mark D's chip, is very cheap to purchase and maintain and is one of the strongest engines BMW ever made.

With a 3.73 diff this combo is quick. I am also turbochraging mine, it will be a street legal track car.

Ralph,

I dont have any of these plans in my future, but just out of "war of the older engines" curiosity, what would be a better swap in a E30, this M30 or the engine out of a E28 535, Like what KASSAB did?

The e28 535i motor is the second generation m30 and is a strong motor as well, it also has a lower compression ratio which is good for turbo charging.

The third generation m30 came in the e34 535i and the e32 735i (like the one in the pics) which has a stronger bottom end and larger valves.

You can also use any m30 535i tranny on an e34 m30 motor, but not the other way around.

The most important reason for using the m30 from the e34 or e32 is the oil pan clearance for the steering rack. You can use an e34 m30 oil pan on an e28 m30 block by the way to curb this problem.

I am now doing some serious math and drawings to check for the clearance since I am doing an e36 M3 steering rack swap whcih is a bit bigger in diameter than the stock one.

Raph.

whenever ive swapped an engine on any BMW, ive always removed the tranny first, i find it a hole lot easier. Looks like a clean engine.

It depends on the car. The 735i had so much engine room, I could have even pulled ut the drive shaft and diff bolted onto the tranny as well.

If I was to pull the engine alone, it would have taken another 1/2 to separate the tranny.
