Weird tranny noise

Hello everyone,

I own a 97 318i, and I have recently noticed a strange noise coming - I assume - from the transmission. The loud "clanky" sound is only noticeable when the car is in neutral or as I am about to shift into the first and second gears. I have seen this happen with other bimmers of the same model, but never bothered to look the details up on the Internet - until now.

Can anybody give me any tips on what's causing the noise?

Thanks,
S.

Guibo, tranny mounts, center support bearing, diff mounts
I'd check all of theis before assuming tranny is toast.
