Redo stock system?

I'm pretty sure the factory system in my '96 328i is gone.. The rears have lots of distorted low-end bass, and the fronts are WHISPER quiet! I want to replace these parts with cost-effective setups as I'm on a limited budget and don't want to invest loads more $$ into the car. Any suggestions for redoing the speakers and replacing stock HU with another simple-factory-look-alike setup? I'm also sure a new AMP will be needed (what about wirirng, will I need to put new ones in?). Lastly I'm looking for a HU with an auxilliary input (ie. for an external MP3 player to be plugged in).

Any info is appreciated. Thanks guys!

Say under $800 (keep it as low as possible), I'm not looking to use a sub just yet.

Thanks guys! Paul, please keep it lower than that if possible! I'm not looking for audiophile level stuff here, just something decent enough to get by with good highs mids and lows. Nothing extra-special

What size do you recommened for decent bass output from the rears and fronts, without significant mods to the car's door/rear deck panels?

Don't the bigger speakers require cutting?

Also what about this setup:

6x9 conversions in rear (anyone sell those adapter plates cheaper than BSW?)
6" in the door panel
and 4" in the front doors.

you car has a 6 or 6.5 in the kick panel and the doors a 4" and tweeter like I said once before, and the rear 5.25 or 4", I would stall away from 6x9 all togather...
