1992 318i

Any place in Toronto to take a 1992 BMW 318i (212,000 kms) for a diagnostic test. Looking to buy. Looks like a great deal (6500 CDN), and really want it, but would like to make sure. Reasonable price, if possible.

Anything in particular I should be made aware?

No rust, new clutch, new waterpump, etc.

Many thanks for any info, advice, suggestions...

6500 is an average price
see if the place you buy it from can get it certified for you before purchase so you dont have to worry about any problems.

you shouldnt say "dont have to worry bout any problems" there are a lot of things that can happen even though the car is ceritified...

yeah i know, i should have been more clear

the one thing i always hate about buying a used car is going in to get it safety checked and emissions tested, and then you get charged up the A$$ for parts here and there that you had no idea were broken before you bought the car. One time i ended up spending $2300 safety and emissions testing on a $500 car I bought a few years ago...what a shocker eh?
car only had 50,000km on it too!!

For a 318 in excellent condition w/ under 200,000km you should expect upwards of $10,000Cdn. Any 318 w/ over 200,000km and sold for under $8,000Cdn you should be very careful of. I suspect there may be sub-frame damage, get it checked out at Chucks.

Certified doesn't mean $hit, all it means is that the car is driveable, basically it starts and the brakes work.

My car was certified and within 4 months since purchasing the car here were the list of repairs...

- both (2) engine mounts
- A/C top off
- fan resistor
- thermostat
- car starter
- muffler
- all 3 belts
- driver side control arm bushings
- lower front tie bar missing (replaced w/ x-brace by me)
- tires worn (to be replaced after winter)

Well that's about it Notice how all these items have nothing to do with owning a 318, it's E36's in general. There are always repairs. I feel like my car is nevef 100% all fixed up at any given time.

Anyways,I suggest looking for a 1994 318 w/ 180-200K km, I did, got it for a steal... $9,800. My insurance gave me $10,500 for my wrecked '92 318, so gives you an idea how much a good one is worth.

good luck,

bryan
