I went by CT to pick up some Mobil 1 10-30 and saw that they have a new oil called Extended Protection, they say that it will last 20 000 Km or one year..can anyone comment on this? Is it worth the extra money or is it a scam? Also do most people here run year round oil or different oil for summer/winter?

the oil may last long but there are still metal filings in the oil you want to get out of your engine....

Very true. Funny that BMW dealership will refuse to do warranty oil service at less than 24k. A buddy tried doing his 330i at 10k intervals under warranty and they refused.

Mobile 1 is the worst oil on the market . It is not a true synthetic oil .Quaker state euro sythetic oil is a true synthetic oil 5w30 . I have been a BMW tech for 25 years and trust me stay away from Mobile oil . The next best thing would be Lubromoly synthetic .

I Castrol's synthetic isn't real synthetic. I've never heard or read anything about Mobil 1.

It seems like oil brands are something that everyone has their preference on and most of the research that I have read seems to go back and forth..BMW TECH, why is the mobil 1 advertised as a fully synthetic?

what the hell are you talking about? please tell me where you heard Mobil1 is not a true synthetic oil.

if ANYTHING, Mobil1 is the only domestic brand that IS a true synthetic. Castrol Syntec was proven to be a bunch of bullshit "synthetically" refined mineral oil. and that was in a lawsuit BY MOBIL1!

Liqui-Moly is an excellent synthetic German oil. only other true synthetic oils that wont cost you $20/litre or more are Amsoil, Royal Purple, ELF, and Motul.

I'm currently running 10W30 Mobil1 in my M44 engine, and its great. I already have a 5L jug of Liqui-Moly 5W40 lined up for my next oil change. I understand M44's are much better suited to 5W40, and the only stuff I'd put in from now on is Liqui-Moly, Amsoil, or Motul.

to answer your question: stay away from "extended life" oils. even synthetic oil should be changed often. although it maintains its viscosity much longer than mineral oil, it still gets dirty from metal particles, and your filter still needs to be changed. i change every 3,500 KM on synthetic.

Most shops will recommend 10k. BMW does 24k under warranty. That's abuse in my opinion.

I try to change mine every 5000k, and i do my oil changes with 5W30 Royal Purple!

I ve read alot many different articles saying that most oil filters can last only about 5K where as the synthetic oil can last around 10K.

Benny, would the 5-40 be good for winter or is it too thick?
