97 528i

i'm going to pick up a 97 528i automatic and i wanted to know what i should look for. it has 140,000 miles

140 000 Miles ???.... check if the engine is running ,,, and if it does , see if transmition shifts in all the gears

But really i wouldnt buy automatic with this kind of mileage .... i would recomend you to try and find manual.... if you dont have too much money its not worth buying a bmw with really high mileage, i m not saying they cant take it but who knows , better be safe then sorry cuz if something series gets ****ed the car will end up sitting on your driveway for a long time .... i know because i ve been in this ****ed up situation before .. my 540 has 305000km already and its still going strong without any series problems....

for the amount of money i had i couldnt find a 540.

Does anyone know what could cause i very rough idle upon start up when cold, but it only lasts until i hit the gas and get the idle up for a sec then it runs fine. could it be spark plugs?

I have the same car. On start up mine sounds a little rough but smooths to a purr in a few seconds.
If it is smooth once it's warm, I would not worry. Enjoy the E39.

Rough idle on start up is the cause of oil on spark plugs due to the valve cover gasket leak

I don't know about the in-line 6 but the 4.4 v8 is known for seal and gasket leaks.

ive noticed that the gaskets are bad. i thought my leak was from the oil filter housing, so i changed it but i think the oil pan and valve cover are leaking.

is there anyway to check if one certain O2 sensor is bad? i bought one then realized there are 2 before the cat and then 2 after. i believe only the ones before the cat are bad.

I personally don't know how to check. Back in January, my shop hooked my 540 up to their diagnostic computer, which indicated that all 4 had to be changed.

DO NOT buy them from the dealer. Dealer sells Bosch sensors which can be picked up for over half the price if you shop around. Here in Toronto, dealer wants $330 each for the back pair. I found a shop that sold them for $90. Fronts are cheap, like $30 or 40 each.

Dealer will RAPE you on O2's (well, they'll rape you for pretty much everything)...

i had another question about changing the automatic transmission fluid. i dont see anywhere to fill it in the engine compartment. would i have the drop the whole pan or is there a drain? so if there is nowhere to check if the fluid is the right amount how do i know how much to put in?
