Valve Adjustment

Hey guys,

I'm going to be doing a valve adjustment on my 2.7 stroker. Can anyone tell me what clearances I should be getting?

325e bottom end
325i head

What other info is needed?

the fact that it is a m20 is all that matters here.

tight 0.010

That engine isn't a stroker.

No, physically changing the stroke length, often along with increasing the bore, makes it a stroker.

The term "stroker" seems to be associated with any m20 with more then 2.5l of displacement. His engine configuration is more acurately called a "2.7i"

PS. Sorry that I've ruined your day by using the term stroker that is really losely thrown around...especially since I've had my first BMW for what, maybe less than a month. You gotta start somewhere.

That valve clearance spec should also be used when the engine is stone-cold, I would reccomend letting the engine sit overnight, then doing the adjustment.

Thanks for the input.

I did the valve job today and put everything in spec while the engine was stone cold. 0.010". Closed everything up, started her up, and I have loud ticking. Shut it down and redid everything. All in spec again and double checked. Started it up again and STILL ticking! My engine was not ticking before the valve job - at least not this loud.

I bring it over to my friend's house, he does the job for me, and it's STILL ticking!

Anyone have any ideas how to get it to stop ticking? Should I go lower on the gap? Maybe 0.008 or something? Aything to get rid of the annoying ticks. Are the rockers worn, cam lobes worn? Anything would help.

Jordan, I don't think you should have sold your e30; your level of dick-ness has gone way up. I presume it's because you miss your car.

To me, it seems odd that the ticking has increased unless your valves were too tight before the adjustment. When you adjusted them, did you loosen them? If they were too tight, then this is what it was supposed to sound like.

That's what I'm thinking too.


But yes, I loosened some and tightened others. Some had no gap, while others had to much of a gap. But they are all now in spec. It's a little annoying now, but if it's in spec, I guess that's how it should be?

If you don't like it sell the car, or swap in a 24v 6.

yea all e30's tick once u adjust the valves and there right u will hear the injecters they tick pritty good too as jorden says if u don't like ticking than a m20 is not for u

Its taken some getting used to because at first when i was a Bimmer Newb I was constantly checking my oil and couldnt understand but now I do. Now that Ive got an exhaust I only hear it in the garage.
