Do the parts have to be off the same year or can it just be an e36?

Probably depends on the part. ECU's can vary for example, but a holy-shit handle should be the same.

you have to be careful with all junkyards.
chuck is known for intentionally ripping off customers big time... (on big ticket items like engines, and transmissions).
used bmw parts doesn't have a good inventory system, a lot of the time they'll sell you the wrong part by accident.
Temp should have all the e36 parts you need.

some of those should be ok (foglights, headlights), but it's always best to shop by the year of your car. If you go to bavauto.com you can get a really good idea of what parts fit and don't fit your year.
