S52 motor making noise...

My motor is making a ticking noise between 2000 and 3000 rpms. when i pop the hood and listen with a scope it sounds like it is coming from the vanos. is this a known prob? is it a major prob? i am worried. help please. also i'm going to do a tune up soon. any sugestions for spark plugs.

Could be the Vanos unit. Its pretty common for them to fail depending on milage of your car. Unit + labour usually is around 1000-1500.

stock spark plugs, and it might be that ur just low on oil, and the lifters and makin that sound. dunno for sure though. my .02 cents

Could be the lifters, but if it does sound like its coming from the vanos unit, might be that. The more i read about it, the more i see that its much more common than i thought.

all u have to do is take it to the car to bmw ..pay the 50-100bucks
and they'l let u know
plus could be three things
-vanos
-lifters
-valves
or depends on the type of ticking noise
could be your chain guides (tentioner )

mine was makin a ticking! i thought it was the valves...but instead it was the fan shroud just hardly touching the fan.....the ass who used to own the car must have taken it to some asshole that put pull ties in it!
