SC or Turbo???

as all of u guys know...im planning on getting a touring wagon in the near future...

im just curious what should i go with if i drop in an engine mod...

SC or Turbo...i like SC cus my friend from Renn-Sport (new company) is building a faster SC...and i like turbos cus of the blow-of valve...and i love sleepers...

so what do u guys think...dropping an M5 is out of the question...

why don't you get the best of both worlds? I have a supercharger on my motor WITH a blow-off valve.... either way, how do you expect to have a "sleeper" with that thing chirping under the hood? If it's the sleeper LOOK you're after, then a turbo's INTERCOOLER is not advised. Super is more reliable as long as the boost is kept in moderation. It's also cheaper in general.

Hey Randy!

Remember this phrase?

KISS

Keep
It
Simple
Stupid

Marita,

I do believe that Randy is right when he says that supercharging would be more of the sleeper way with a big HP gain, but reliaibilty is an issue.

I would love to turbocharge my low HP 1988 325e 2.7L that only has 130 hp max to bring it to a level of an M3. But an engine swap with upgraded internals will be more than sufficiant and the power is always there. There is nothing like a good high HP naturaly asperated engine!

Now my main question is what kind of wagon? 540i touring?

hmm

Ok, sorry if I don't know my technical terms for modifying cars, but here I go.

Bascially, this topic has been quite overtalked about many months ago. I guess the first thing you want to take into consideration is the cost you're willing to spend.

I think after going for a turbocharged car, many have never gone back to the SC setup, maybe a few, but not a lot. More like more ppl. going from a SC to turbocharger

One thing that confuses me is ppl. saying, "I want to hear the blow off valve noise", on turbocharged cars. I mean, my friend's A4 has no BOV, but every time he backs off the gas, it makes this PSHHSHSHS noise. That noise is coming from the by-pass valve. It's not the BOV noise. A BOV noise is sorta like a high pitched chirp! Anyways, correct me if i'm wrong, but even if a put a BOV on a turbocharged car and you have it recircculated back to the...forgot the name..., you won't really hear the BOV anymore. You'll just hear a short PSSHS noise when you back off gas. Then again, you could always add in those fak BOV's on a non-forced induction car LOL, they relaly have those, electronically produced sound.

Correct me if i'm wrong again, but the last time i hear randy blowing past my car when shooting videos, I did not hear his BOV what soever. I'm thinking cuz he did that recirculated thingy...

Anyways, if you want a sleeper, then maybe you should get the newer version of the vortech superchargers such as DONDON's. It's stealth, i heard. But for me, I love the regular vortech supercharger noises. it's sort of like a birdy chirping noise at idle, Randy knows it, b/c his sounds exactly like what i'm trying to explain. Unless the Rennsport supercharger your friend is making uses the Powerdyne, then you may hear a little whinning noise (which I don't like ).

Anyhow, I'd say supercharge it if you prefer less maintenance and you're looking for more power, but not like MORE power which you can get from turbochargering

Marita....

In that case supercharger would be the way to go if you want to spend less. however, i rather take the turbocharging route. But then like what '88 325e said, you may have to change some internals. Depends what stage you go for.

Is the wagon manual or auto??

Just curious, i know it's way out of my league, but how much does a supercharger kit go for here in toronto?
I'm pretty sure i could manage installing it myself. A turbo charger i'll never install myself ever again, what a headache.

heh

well

Given that AA sells their OBD II turbo for the E36 M3's at about $10 U.S.

I am assuming vortech kits made by RMS, ERT, Dinan may cost about $7,000 to under $10,000 CDN dollar. That is my very rough guess!

i think i'd rather buy an e36 M3 then instead of dropping a S/C on my 325i =)

i think it'd cost the same anyways except maybe insurance would kill me.

oh well, i'm happy with my cars performance. I think i'll just have to wait until i run my own business to get anything expensive =)

well I could be exagerating on the pricing, but I just recall seeing those kits sold for about $5000 U.S. dollar so yea. But you can always buy second hand ones, that is if they're still in good condition
