Arrow e46 Steering Problems

I have 2001 325i with the factory sports suspension. The steering for the most part has always been "tight" and responsive. However, recently the steering is loose and wobbly.

The steering wheel has way too much play and the car is all over the place on the road. (literally the wheel is shaking back and forth as I drive). What could the problem be....

Dealership says the control arms are fine (BMW Mississauga).

I had something similar once that was fixed under warranty. It was some kind of tension spring in the steering column. My symptoms weren't as severe as yours though, just vibrations/shaking in the wheel at low speed, but the car wasn't all over the place. But it was much harder to control properly.
