When considering dslr it will mean buying into a "system" of bodies and lenses which will give alot of flexibility as opposed to point&shoot fixed lens digicams with no flexibility.
If you're planning on getting on SLR, it is a long-term decision as you will have to invest in lenses eventually . Sometimes the lens costs more than the body depending. But the lenses you will keep and use them for the next new body that comes out.
For about a grand or so you can purchase a Canon, Nikon, Olympus package for example.
Usually for that price you will get a "kit" lens which is alright but later on you might want to invest on some better lenses. I've only had my dslr since March of this year and I'm happy with it.
For Canon in the price range try Rebel XTi, for Nikon try D70s or D80 which is newer, and Olympus try E500.
I hope to see you eventually getting a dslr and getting more into photography as I see you enjoy it. I'm new to dslr's too so I have yet much to learn. It would be nice to have a "Max" photography club.
From what I can recall so far these are the "max members" with dslrs...me(E-1), Manimillion(Rebel), Bill Gates (E-500), Qimis(Rebel)?, WhiskyM3(D1), and there's more for sure.. We should make up a list.
