E36 325i vs. E46 320i

I currently drive an E36 325i and i'm looking into buying an E46 320i.
Here's what I get out of my car at the moment...

E36 325i
KMs per tank: approx. 500kms
$$ to fill tank: $50-$55
HP: not sure but I always thought it was 189hp

With an E46 320i... what can I expect for those same specs???

Also keep in mind the 320i uses the inline 6, not a 4-banger like the old 318. Torque numbers are better and it's silky smooth. You'll be surprised at the responsiveness of the throttle. I know I was.

I usually get over 600 kms per tank, a bit less in the winter. I believe it makes ~170 or 180 hp, not too sure but it doesn't feel any different than the e46 325 (320's a bit lighter in weight).

Mine's a standard, not sure if an auto would make the same fuel consumption, but it's really great on fuel on the hwy, ~7.5 L/100km

When I hit the highway to T.O., I can almost get 800KM out of a full tank (Esso supreme), but thats not stock (cold air intake/exhaust/pulleys).

How are the e46 320's performance wise? Is there a big noticable difference between the 320 and the 323, or the 325?
I know i wasn't too impressed when I drove an e36 320.

The e46 320 feels a lot quicker than it really is, but I don't really notice a difference between the same year 325, I think there's only 10 hp difference between the two. The newer 320 have more hp than the old 323's, same engine though I believe.

Then again, bmw's aren't known for their speed

I didn't know e36 had a 320i... do you mean 318i?

The numbers for the stock e36 318i is not so good compared with the e46 320i, I mean its a pretty big difference...
Its good to know that this time the lowest model was not an after thought. Based on it's specs I'm surprised it didn't sell better...

The e46 320i was much quicker than I expected but coming from a '94 V4 Camry it really didn't take much to impress me...

Yes, e36 had a 320 as well... it was brought in to provide a bigger gap between the 325 and 328. It was a detuned (and underestimated) 325 engine.

Not as many 320's were sold, not because of the performance numbers.. but because a lot of luxury/trim options were not available on the 320's.

I wouldn't even hesitate to buy an automatic. Unlike most steptronic/tiptronic trannies, the BMW one is actually usable. You can get it to redline before shifting manually. I've also seen paddle shifter upgrades. Very cool.

I think the 320i is going to hold it's value nicely. I got 800kms on my last tank during a trip to Ottawa.
