engine swap question

when do i need to use the clutch alignment tool? I am putting the m3 engine onto my 325i tranny tomorrow, do I need to align n e thing? Thanx

p.s. I am using the 325i clutch and flywheel.

when you pull the tranny out you will see the clutch.
Remove the pressure plate
The clutch disc will fall
Remove the flywheel (if needed)
Change the crankshaft seal
Install the flywheel and torque the NEW bolts at spec.
Install the clutch disc (in the right direction) pin it with the aligment tool
install the pressure plate. and torque to spec.

Easy.

sometimes easy, i find without the proper tools, your screwed, your gonna need pretty long 1/2" extensions with flex bits to get the top bolts back on and off. but thats only if you are installing the tranny and clutch after the engine is in. but yes the process after that and before you put it together is pretty straight forward

Thanx guys, and yeah the tranny will be out with the engine, I found it to be very frustrating when tryin to get the top bolt for the tranny. So I'm taking it all apart. How do I know the clutch is aligned?

By using the clutch tool

I just did mine and it was a PITA, because the race clutch has 2 discs, which had to be aligned with each other, in addition to the crank bearing. Basically, if the tranny fits, it's aligned. It's possible to eyeball it, but it will make the tranny install trial and error. What I did was bolt the pressure plate down only enough to hold the clutch disc in place, but not super tight ... I then mated up the tranny, which presumably adjusted the clutch disc into proper alignment. Then, every carfully pull out the tranny again, torque the pressure plate down to spec, and reattch the tranny. Done.

Yes, and it's much easier with a regular 1 disc clutch. However, I just learned that Princess Auto has the universal clutch tool on sale ... like $15 or something, so it might be worth your time to pick one up.

The idea is to simply align the hole in the clutch disc with the hole in the dearing in the crank, so like I said, it can be done without the tool, it's just a bit more guess work and trial error. If your engine/tranny is out of the car when you do this, it should be MUCH simpler

yeah Ill have them out and on the ground seperated, so if the trial and error gets to me, i will just go to princess auto, I called a princess auto store a while back and they said the sell no auto tools? Am I thinkin of the same place?

if both is out ...line it up by eye and then slide the tranny in ...easy ..boom done
