well keep this in mind, black goes with everything, so having black highlights on a car of most any color cant be bad...
color match where needed, but dont forget to have points on the car that bring out a particular highlight. Other wise as you said it will look as if the whole car was dipped and it looses its shape basicly. So dont forget to have contrasts. Highlight the cars accents (the german accents yuk yuk
