E36 M3's are a legend?? What the hell are you talking about?? The NA model is probably the least M version of any 3 series.

To all those people talking about performance. The E36 M3 is not out performing an E46 330ci by much in all aspects.. and in terms of styling and class, it can't touch it. Remember, if you think it's making a statement.. 99% of people can't tell the difference between a 318 and an M3.. they just see an old 3 series.

aschon has a point, if this was the euro M3, then this would be a no brainer.

But as for styling, the E46 doesn't do it for me THAT much more than the E36. Style is different for everyone.

Simple:
Looks/asthetics = 330
Performance = M3

By performance, I don't mean just 1/4. Plus there is way more performance aftermarket for the M3 also. And parts are generally readily available and cheaper.

I personally like both cars a lot, it'd be a toss up, but in the end I'd probably choose the M3. Then again I'm a function before form type of guy.

I have been around BMWs my whole life and I have a 330 and have driven every M car except the new M5 or an SMG M3. The E36 M3 is a nice car, tight handling and good power for its time. Styling is personal preference so I won't touch that. If you get a 330ci with sport suspension(which I think is standard on it????) it is still a tight car with only 15 hp less than the M3. So performance wise, the difference is minimal on the 1/4 and on the track IMO. However, if your planning on keeping the car for a long time, I would go with the newer 330 because resale will be higher. The E36 M3 still has good value, but I see their value dropping drastically in the near future because of the new M3 coming out. Also, it is very hard to find one in good condition. Lastly, the one big drawback of the M3 is its power. Sure its 240hp, but you can buy a stock civic with close to that HP rating now. Its starting to become an old horse. No offense to anyone that owns one, I love the E36 M3s, but every car has its time. I personally love the E30 M3s, great looking car...soooo gangsta!!! But when we look at it in today's terms...its kinda slow! My vote is for the 330....but only you know what you want, so pick whatever puts the biggest smile on your face when you drive it

end of the day, ask yourself this:

when you wake up every morning and go out to your garage, and open the door... which of those 2 cars will put a bigger smile on your face?

^ Yeah he's right. Every time I see a E90 on the road, my mint E36 M3 in the garage makes me feel like shit.

Thanks for the sarcasm,
but I'm sure if you saw an E46 330ci you'd be even happier.

you guys are completely right on both sides of the coin.
I was just recently looking at it in detail, and the 330 is extremely close in performance.

With that said, would any of your answers change if the original question was between a 328ci and an e36 m3?

Im actually going to weigh all of my options for this purchase, and in all honesty, this car will be something I will keep for a long time.

Personal preference in this matter. Yes the e36 is outdated however so is the e46.
Having said that I would not trade my E36M3 for any M3 out there and I will never sell her (Sorry Rodney). When I seen my first e36 in 1992 it was love at first sight. That day I told my self I have to have one. Well now there is one in the garage, which happens to be parked right by my next favorite BMW, e39 540i w/6Speed.

personally i think e46 330 are nice, however the e36 m3 lines are a lot more eye catching to me. And if you care for power, or styling, you can use the money saved to invest in a twin screw, or buy accessories to trick out your car. at the end of the day you can drive with a stock e46 330 and be happy or drive out with a tricked m3 and be happy.

If you look at it investment wise you will lose alot more money with the 330. If you look at it performance wise the E36 M is much better in every aspect.
If you look at it looks wise IMO 330 dont look good when stock without the M-TECH bumpers. Warrenty wise unless you get a fairly new one 2003 or newer you will have less then a year left on warrenty.

BUT the only problem with the E36 M's is that its very hard finding one in good condition and little KM. So if your in search of a good E36 M it will take a while but I guarantee if you are into nice sunday drives on some back curvy roads you absolutly wont go wrong with the E36 M
