E30 M30 Turbo project.

Got my 3rd generation M30 engine mounts from Berlin Germany, sand blasted, primed and spray painted them. I really wanted to build them but I am so out of time. They really came out nicely.
Have a set of Utherane engine and gearbox mounts waiting to go in. I will sand and paint my engine bay before anything is installed.

Mine is from the E34 535i, but there are two older generations which came in the e28 535i and e24 635

My m30 3.5L engine stock will put out 220 HP and I will turbo charge it.
Here is my engine just before I started pulling it apart.

The block has almost zero wear and so are all the crank and main bearings. These are claimed to be one of the most solid engines BMW ever made in the day.
Because I am turbocharging it, I will do a complete rebuild.

Yea the e28 engines are really strong as well, in fact I have an 87 e28 535i complete I bought the car for the 3.25LSD, drive shaft, Getrag 260-6 gearbox
and single mass flywheel.

Here are some other stuff I am installing on my e30, tons more to come.

Bmwm, I was reading your post again, were you saying that you had an e34 M30 engine in your e28?

have you looked into that clearance issue? The last swap I saw, the guy had to shave down part of intake manifold because the engine was too high.

I think it depends on which M30 they used and the motor mount bracket they used. I purchsed my brackets from a guy in Europe, who made all three style brackets for all 3 generations of the M30 engines and they did have all the alignment issues sorted out.

In any event, if the hood is touching, I will install a low profile hood scoop facing the windsheild at that point. Instead of forcing air into the engine bay by having the scoop facing forward, I will have it facing backward. This way it will do two things, since there is more air force acting upward below the car and hot air rises, it will allow heat to escape upward and cool air in from below cooling the engine. The second advantage, facilitating more downforce since you are removing the air pressure from under the front of the car.

Thanks Chris, you may not only be able to see it but get a ride in it as well

I am a bit behind, was hoping to be test running it Naturally aspirated by now, but had a few jobs which had some snags.

are you gonna come over to GTA for a meet with all of us? (we are not that far)

any plans for a lighter hood? this M30 will make the car nose-heavy, no?

Alex

I would love to come up for a GTA meet, I used to go up TO allot before and have to make a few more trips. Would be great having you guys onboard for some runs

No plans for a lighter hood as yet. The 3rd generation M30 is about 55 lbs heavier than the M20. With the AC delete, aluminum bumper delete, it should not be too critical especially after having the car corner balanced. I may have to add weight at the back to prevent wheel slip and wheel hop on launch so this may offset the nose heavy effect as well.

M20 weighs around 260 lbs
M30 weighs around 315 so it is 55 lbs heavier than the M20

No I had the M30 in my e28. More or less the same engine, but slightly de-tuned as the e34 M30. Mine was a 533i, with the 3.2/3.5 Detuned M30 in it. Same engine as the 535, just lower Hp.
