Yes it's the same engine, I have a friend with a 1994 320i, it's not very fast, but it's very well geared for the 4th gear, so try racing from 150 km/h, you might have a chance.

i raced one the other day
he was behind me at the lights so i took off normally in first ..and dude kept riding my ass put in second and i could see him changing lanes ..and as soon as got next to me we both punched it and it was neck and neck till about 150
then i started pulling a little bit till 180(was still in fourth ..changing to fifth)
i had to turn at the next offramp ..so after that i was braking pritty hard

but yeah the 320 isnt that quick ..but compared to other bigger motor cars their pritty quick
but anyways ...im putting my m3 on the road soon ...mmmmm...cant wait

I had a 94 320i, it wasn't anything to brag about, but the gearing was pretty decent!

When i had that car, a buddy of mine had a 97 GTI Vr6(i hate VW). We raced so many times, and every time we raced, i always took him the first 2 gears, it was once we were in 3rd gear that he would catch up and take care of me!

Other than that, i do not see the big deal with VR6's, 12V, hahaha, they're JOKES..... not THAT fast either, its just a vdub thing. I find it almost IMPOSSIBLE to believe that a IS300 barely kept up to a VR!!

Well...the particular IS300 I was driving was a used car, automatic, and beat to shit by the previous owner- so it wasn't on it's best performance...i've driven other IS's where the performance was noticiably better.

And the VR6 was lowered and had a pipe...so it might have been modified...
