DIY - Sunglasses Holder (Replaces Ashtray)

** From e90post.com **

Quote:
I installed the sunglass holder ( part #51-16-7-132-376 about $20) last night and it took about 20 minutes including taking the pictures. Steps might be a little different for cars with an automatic transmission.

1) Remove the shift boot using your hand and carefully pulling up on the edge of the boot.
2) Move the gear shift into 2nd gear to make it easer to remove the center console trim cover.
3) Open the console storage compartment lid.
4) Pull up with a steady firm grip on the rear part of the shift boot opening to remove center console cover.
5) Disconnect the lighter plug.
6) Pull the center console cover over the shift boot to gain access to the underside.
7) Remove the 4 T-20 torx screws that hold the ashtray assembly.
8) Use a small screwdriver to pop off the aluminum/wood trim from the ashtray cover.
9) Install trim on new sunglass holder lid.
10) Attach sunglass holder to the center console cover.
11) Reinstall center console cover. It just snaps back into place.

I really wanna do this.. but way to afraid.. lol

Anyone gunna attempt this??

Wow, you guys are dismantling your cars already! I'm envious!... Surprised that part is only $20 too, hmm...

Any pics of what it looks like installed? Looks like a nice little mod.. I say go for it.

Was it an option to have a sunglasses holder instead of a lighter?

edit: i looked it up, yes it was an option. It also seems that it would be pretty similar to do the reverse and wire up a lighter, for you fellas who recently took up smoking

It was an option?? damn.. I missed out on that.. I hate having the small tray + lighter, especially since there is an extra lighter in the arm rest.. And I want that tray for my sunglasses, would be awesome..

wow, thats a good idea...who smokes in their car anymore anyways? And for the people who DO, who actually taps ashes or butts into the ashtray? Everytime I see a smoker, it's ashes and butt out the window...

If u install the sunglass holder, you will lose the front power socket.
But if you can get by with the armrest socket, then go for it

I have never used the front power socket nor will i ever, looks hideous to have that front flap up with a cell phone charger stickin out.. armrest socket was a great idea and looks way more cleaner to hide the charger or whatever u are plugging into it.. imo
