Tranny

Are all E30 tranny's the same?
As in will a tranny off of a M20 fit onto a E30 M42 318?

M20 and M42 trannys are different. Getrag 260 and Getrag 240.

No idea if they're interchangable.

It has to fit...since E30 318 fits on an E36 318...and E36 318 are also used in M50's...which are interchangable with the M20!

But in your case you might have to play with driveshafts and shifter linkages, as they may not fit!

Fit is all relative. But yes.. pilot bearing swap and the correct combo of flywheel clutch and whatnot will work.

Yes...i know...you have to consider clutch, flywheel, shifter linkage, driveshaft, and mounts...But i was taking about the "block to tranny" bolt on part!

Perfect, I always liked the E30 gearbox compared to my E36 (+ the 1:89 final drive).
Have a spare tranny off of an 86 eta that I want on my 318.

Thinking a e36 325 Clutch, E30 325 flywheel, E30 slave sylinder, E20 tranny mounts (with a whole drilled in cross member for the different location), weld in a 1.75" extension for the shifter linkage. I already know the drive shaft bolts up and is within the 2-3" of play distance wise. Only thing I'm a little worried about is will the starter fit on the e30 flywheel.

Any wholes in my plan you can see, pls let me know.

Thanks,
