which side of the spark plug?
the side with the electrode inside the combustion chamber, or the porcalin side were the coil slides over it?
If the outer side fairly easy fix, valve cover gasket.

Come on now, don't scare the guy too much. It's probably just the valve cover gasket that needs replacing. It's a cheap part and only takes a couple hours in this weather to change. It's a very common problem on the E36's.

99.999999% probably exactly what he said^^^
I love how everyone gets on the "ur motor is shot bandwagon" and scare the shit out of the guy.
I had the same issue, when i pulled my plugs a few of them had some oil on them and it was just the valve cover gasket leaking. Its $40 from the dealership and that inludes the rings that go around the holes where the spark plugs sit and thats whats leaking the oil into the plug hole. when u pull the plugs the oil leaks into the combustion chamber and when u start the car up it might spit out some blue smoke at first but no big deal. If anything its some extra lubrication. Just make sure no dirt or grime falls in there while ur doing it.

No, you are wrong. When you have smoke on startup it is because of worn valve guide seals. Leaking piston rings burn oil consistanty, and how would oil travel UP from below the pistons into the combustion chamber after shutting down? It leaks in from the head.
