The top part is safe with a normal spray job,Im pretty sure boat hulls need to be epoxyed..you spary it with clear and it will come off very quickly
and double up that epoxy if you're gonna use it in Lake Ontario

I've built a few in my day, and I'm getting ready to redo one that I built in 94. This bad boy have never seen the water. The sun has eaten up the shine, and the colors are dated. But waht you have to do is use Gel Coat. You can ase any GOOD two part paint, ABOVE the water line. I'm using gel, it will have a nasty orange peal. It will sand like hell, but once the orange peal is of it will be easy. There is a way of getting around it, but I would have to kill you after I told you. Knowledge is Xpencive. DON'T Clear white Gel, cus it will Yeller (yellow). Gel is the best it will stick like it belonged there. Put the stuff on thick because you will sand most of it off. You can buy a cheep cup gun to spray it. I could tell you how to apply several colors without feeling and graduation from one color to the next, but then we are at the killing thing again. And the stuff you mix together to make it shine like a boat that just popped out of the mold, well you know. Any way just use Gel. Check any Fiber Glass repair shops to see where they buy their Gel from. Don't worry about drip's because they will sand out. You can't screw it up. Well thats all for now. If you want more info let me know.

I helped paint my friend's dad's boat about 2 years ago.
Gotta sand it down, prime it, and all that good stuff.
I believe the paint we used on it was polyurethane based.

Gel Coat- the same stuff that is on the boat now. Sand it down with 220, clean it well and then spray it. Gel Coat come in a bunch of standard colors. And if you want to get funky you can mix colors to make your own. I took blue and red to make several colors of boyzenberry. Or like waht I might do is a yellow with blue and then mix the two and make a third color of green. But white and red make pink, not cool. You can find Gel Coat on the web, and get it shipped to your door. I used 15 cc of MEKP (the catalyst) to a quart of gel coat. If you don't thin it you will need a gun with a big tip, like 2.5 or so. The shit is thick. That chick up there is hot. Any way, that is it Gel Coat. Go to Yahoo or Google and type in Gelcoat. You should have a Fiberglass retailer around, and they should have gelcoat as well. It's like $75.00 a gallon depending on color. Building boats and gelcoating in the mold is an art,but an external gelcoat job is a bitch. Alot of sanding, down to 1000 grit. Try the Jamestown Distributors web site. I like her ass. Any thing else??

No freeking priming with gelcoat, what a waisted step. Just use gelcoat and it will last forever, or until you hit something. And use a high temp mold wax on your gelcoat. I used it on my boats when I was towing id the drag boats on Firebird lake. The lake is a scummy salt water. And the wax wouldn't let that crap stick at all. It just blew right off, no washing and buffing.

sounds good my boat is red already but the entire hull is red, i want to add more white to it,

so this is going to be messy then eh? when i spray it on it will orange peel then i need to sand it all away? is there a clear finnish or anything i put on? how do i make it shine?

im going to paint the top side, a white GM pearl and i want to respray the bottom red again, but only a stripe of red, the rest white

oh 1 more thing, can i add a flake to the gel coat? i want the red to be metalic
