Can cops search your trunk?

As far as I know cops cannot search your car on public property without reasonable grounds. On private property cops can search the interior of your car. The trunk however I don't know.

Anyone know?

He isnt allowed unless they have a resonable assumption you've got something illegal in there, or unless you give them permission.

yup, especially after september 11 they changed the rules, I dont know how many of you remember the news but the cops have like more "authority" to inspect your belongings if they think your potentially dangerous or something

well, cops can basically do whatever they want. If you say no, then it means you got something to hide and even if you ask if they got a warrant, they'll follow you to whatever place you're heading and wait till the warrant comes, so basically if you got something to hide, YOU'RE SCREWED! So, why bother......

Interesting question.
I'm going to check with my future neighbor.
(Peel Regional Detective).

NOPE

I did a study on this in law class.

No they can not search your trunk with out your permission. Unless they have placed you under arrest. If they pull you over for speeding and say whats in your trunk let me see you can tell them no. chances are they will keep you longer but they actually need a search warrent. actually the reason we did the study is cause it happend to my prof. They cant put you under arrest to search your trunk then let you go when they find nothing its called unlawful confinment. theres lots of little things though so dont loose your cool if it happens. If they find any illegal things in the car they have to be in "plain view" to arrest and search your car they cant just pull out of your car and dive in, cause they think theres something in your glove box or trunk. but if they ask you to get out and say can we look in your car and you say yes forget about it they can do what ever they want. Hope that helps some.

just remember

If the cop is a real ass and has it out for you he might try to get a warrent so if there is something in your trunk you might want to think about getting it out
