It basically locks the lock. You can't even unlock the door from the inside when it is used.

There is a secondary solenoid that pushes a rod into the main lock and prevents it from moving up and unlocking.

I'm no car theif expert, but as far as I know, you can't even get it unlocked with a slim jim. And if you smash the window, you still can't get the locking knob to pull up, so the only way in would be to crawl through the window.

Oh and once it is activated it can only be deactivated with the drivers side key hole lock. Since this is the only door that the key manually double locks the door, all the others use the electronic solenoid.

true...i use this all the time. even if someone smashed my window to unlock the door to steal whatever, he/she can't unlock the door and would have to go through the window and risk cutting them selves....then they realize that i put the code in so they can't start the car and then they have to go back out the window.

be carefull though, they are notorious for sezing up and not working. I read somewhere that if used to often it can lock the soleniod even the key can't open. This usually happens if the central locking unit stops working. How do i know? because in my last e30 before i painted it had a rust hole in the driver side rocker panel and water got in there one day and it made my CLU go alll messed up. So when i locked the car all the way to the right, it made my soleniod get stuck. I couldn't get into my e30 for 2 days lol. After tons of research i finally got in the car lol (broke the window lol) and changed the CLU and that fixed everything. Although my CLU stopped working because of water many forums i read said that its very likely for them to stop working.

I didn't realize until now though that with my keyless entry if the soleniod is activated?they key hole is always vertical so i wonder if it still works. I'm gonna put the key in and turn to the right all they way until it is vertical, then use my keyless entry and see if it works.

btw it is a great anti theft device. For a car from the mid 80's to early 90's i'd have to say i'm impressed.

Would someone post instructions on HOW to use this function and how to turn it off?

On my '90 325is, I can use the driver's side keylock NO PROBLEM. Same with the trunk (they both unlock/lock everything). On the passenger side, SOMETIMES (probably due to mistakenly activating this inhibitor) I can use the key, but most of the time, it does not turn and unlock the doors.
