Something around what the sub can handle, or higher.

Don't underpower speakers, slightly overpowering is actually safest.

find an amp that runs at about 300-400rms. You should beable to find a nice kenwood amp for less then $300 at best buy.

Future shop also has some nice deals going on right now with there car audio.

I think what he means is that having an amp that put out slightly more than RMS of your sub is good (just don't turn it up all the way). Having a amp that can't reach your sub's recommended RMS is bad , because if you turn it up all the way and it starts clipping you will destroy a sub with distortion.

If you overpower a sub you will hear it because it will just start hitting the motor structure, you'll hear it before doing a lot of damage... distortion is a little tougher to hear without practice

to over power is fine,to under power is BIG nono....so you have a sub that can 300rms so you can go with 700rms at 8 o,clock on the gain and flat on bass no +1 or max, you clip it and by.by sub....

Basically, you want the sub to distort before the amp does. Amp distorition (also known as clipping) is what ultimately kills speakers. So with a powerful amp, when you hear the sub stressing you know to take it down a little. If the amp wasn't powerful enough, the sub would have already blown.
