1. check the fuse?
2. is the digital climate control operational? (does the display change / can you change settings?)
3. does the blower fan ever turn on? how about air conditioning?
4. does the a/c work?

There is a great chance that the blow motor needs replacing.

AMEN to that problem. I've been going without heat for a while, and those little back-seat heaters are balls, don't waste your $$. As for the problem? One of two things. I had power going through the fuses, but nothing to the motor itself. I'm checking the relay today (relay #9 if you're looking from straight on, the far back left). Make sure you check the fuses like Justin says, otherwise it's a lot of work for nothing.
If not? The blower motor. I hooked up power right to that and nothing, so go to car-parts.com and get a used one. (new one at part source is 350 no core).
Plus, i'll even do a DIY article on it if need be. Seems that everyone is having this problem at once. Just make sure you screw out the caps that hold down the wiper grill (oops), and the rest is a snap. Let me know if the relay solves your problemo.
Thanks

i have the same car and my heat just went.
took it in, and i forget what the part was, but it was really cheap and easy to fix. it might be called the heater or something related to that (couldnt find a picture on google). it's a small piece that can be accessed from inside the car (not under the hood) and it has a heat sink on it, it looks like an afro comb.
also, change your particle filter (under glove compartment).
my car had the exact same problem as yours.. all electronics worked, and when you push the blower button it makes a weird little buzzing noise for about 1 second, and no air

It's the final stage resistor underneath the steering column.
http:// forums.bimmerforums. com/forum/showthread.php?p=3349096
(i can't post links)
Price: $71.95US on Bavauto
(so about 100$ DIY)
or, unless i'm terribly wrong, there's a resistor on that you can resolder for a LOT cheaper
Correct me if i'm wrong please.

Nope, you're right on.
Also, if anyone needs a blower motor, I have a spare (used) one with fins. I'll hook it up to a 12V charge to show you it works too.

Its not enough for justin to make fun of me for it for 20 minutes once. He's gotta bring it ALL up again
lol seriously, i know it sounds stupid, but you wouldn't think of it (accuall, mabye you would) and the white indicator on the slider goes so far both ways you can't see if its entirely one way or the other.
g'luck fixing your problem man. Im sure justin will figure out what the problem is eventually, if he isn't too busy rolling around laughing his ass off at the stupid things i do every day
