E39 high milage?

Hey guys, I've finally decited to buy a bimmer ( http://www.trader.ca/Search/Details....%7C&BackLink=1 )
That's the one I'm aiming towards but it has high milage.

How much would it cost to rebuild the motor, also how much would it be to get one with <100k?

Would it be practical to rebuild, what are the bennefits?

Not sure about ow long those 6's go for but I knwo the 540's will go for 250k +. SO i think you should be ok for a bit but you want to check the general maintenance on the car was done and the weak points such as the cooling systems.

Another plus about a 528 is that you can swap a S50/ S52 in there without too much difficulty.

180,000 kms or 112,000 miles isn't really high milage. I have the same car with 160,000 k and it's in amazing shape.
Make sure you can see all service records to see what has been replaced and take it to a indy BMW shop to look it over.
No reason it shouldn't go for another 150,000 kms.
PM me if you want to know more.

S50/ S52= E36 M3 motor

Edit: I did a search on bf.c and it seems the consensus is that they should be good for 200K+ MILES if maintained properly

Thats not bad mileage after 8yrs. Check on maintenance etc. If looked after it should go for a while without a rebuild. I just sold my BMW with 262,000k and it was still strong and ran great.

Have it checked out by someone who knows BMW cars.

Good luck.

How do I get the maintenance record, do I gotta ask for it from the seller or do the dealerships provide that info?

528's just aren't ideal cars, especially early e39 ones. IMHO to buy a nice 5-er you need to drop about 16-17K, and you're looking at a 540

I have more mileage than that on my 98 540, I got 186,000+km, for a 97 with 180,000km it's pretty normal

not really, I only had 2 real problem with the car, 1 was the catalyst, there clogged up, but it's nothing new to me, the 2nd thing was this valve on the intake manifold, it was causing my car to burn oil severely, but that one was a simple $1200 fix
