European VS Japanese
Please, keep this a clean discussion.
Okay, I've been wondering. How come German horsepower numbers are lower, but their acceleration speeds are faster?
two examples:
IS350 300hp
E36 M3 240hp
but both the same speed?
G35 300hp
E90 330 255hp
But E90 is faster?
My only conclusion is that its the gearing. What do you guys think?

BMW pays the magazines big $$$ to fudge those comparisons/figures.

Could be any number for things....gearing, traction(tires), weight, torque curve, area under the curve...etc.

I heard that all manufactures rate there cars at a high HP then they really are except for BMW. I think you might need to compare Volkswagon or Volvo instead.

Theres alot more to consider than just the max power that the cars engine produces

IS350 300hp
E36 M3 240hp.. how much does an m3 weigh compared to the new IS350?, Iv yet to see a E36 M3 hit under 14.5 at the track..
The same reason my dinky 200hp 2550lb car is hanging neck and neck with TWO e36 m3s so far.. from a stop.

yup, i took my friends E36 m3 by half a car all the way to 160kmh/ other races were neck and neck, him a little in front, or side by side.. same with the 2nd m3 i raced.
Im sure a highway race the m3 would pull, but nothing to special. My car weighs 5,600lbs less. so put that into factor.
And trust me, i can launch a FWD.. i get 2.1 2.2' 60'

damn, a 2.1 or 2.2 60' is good for a fwd. that's ****ed up. Maybe it's because I'm comparing to Supras. It's sick that you hang with the M3s though, must be a fairly quick ride.

GS400/430 vs E39 540ia.
I chose that cause the 2nd gen GS didn't have manual, and I just put down a deposit on a 540ia yesterday. The GS has 300hp/300lb ft, the 540 has 282hp/290 something?? lb ft, the GS does anything between 14.3-14.7, IIRC the 540ia does in the same range.
The Lexus is a cruiser, it's oh-so-smooth, its one of those you slap on good looking wheels and lower it and cruise down on Richmond st. I wouldn't take the car on the canyon run, after I drove the 540ia with sport package, there's no comparison in handling dept. But I do wish the 540 was as quiet as the Lexus, the Lexus is so quiet, you can hear your passenger's heart beat at 100mph.
I don't know the cost on ownership for the 540 yet, but the Lexus was relatively cheap, oil change and gas, and timing belt was coming up. Then boom the car got hit. I assume 540 will definetly be more on the cost, but that's a good trade off for a more fun car to drive. After all, I'm not that old.
