Has Anyone Ever Had Their Tonsils Taken When They Where An Adult?

I am going in for surgery this Friday to get mine taken out as I have had problems with them for the past 2-3 years. I hear it's quite painful to take them out when you are older.

Does anyone have any first hand insight on this and what I should expect after the surgery and how things will feel?

The doctor say that it will hurt real bad for 7-10 days after but I want to hear stories of actual people (18+) that have had their tonsils taken out.

A friend of mine just got hers out a few months ago... she actually works at the hospital too, she's 26 now. She said it was the single most incredibly painful and miserable thing she's ever had to go through. She was out of commission for a month, unable to eat anything, unable to speak, lost a crazy amount of weight. If you want to talk to her yourself to find out what to expect, just give me a call and I'll hook it up... she'll be home from work around 10ish.

From what she told me though, it's not a happy time regardless of what the nurses and docs told her beforehand.

......

Weird... all the doctors told me the pain should be gone by the 10th day. I guess everybody is different when it comes to healing.

Was it worth the pain and agony for that 1 month of pain for her tho?

they told her the same. yeah it was the pain and agony of it all.. even after 2 weeks her dad had to crush food and mix it into her jell-o. and even then she would swallow it... only to find out it's still in her mouth. apparently very frustrating. she had to drink down a lot of ensure and boost drinks since she couldn't eat anything as well. on top of that, she couldn't talk to communicate, and she lost around 25Lb in that month, she gained it back now (thank god), but still...

okay ths is what she has to say:

- 10 days is a lie, try a month.

- The 5th day is the worst, tell him to make sure his tylenol 3's are crushed and ready for day 5. Not the day after.

- eat everything you enjoy tonight. it's going to be a long time before you can do that again.

- stock up on jello and boost.

- you're going to sound like your mouth is filled with marbles for weeks when you speak.

- you'll be sleeping for days. the tylenol-3's will knock you out.

- the nurse will tell you the truth about what to expect. everything the doctor accidentally forgot to mention.

- have fun.

when you grab the boost make sure you buy the one with "plus calories". a guy like you mitch, will need to drink around 6 of those per day to keep your weight somewhat stable.

by the way, when you're knocked out if you need any help with anything just gimme a shout. (well, not literally shout.. you know what I mean.)
