You don't want expensive repair costs because u'll treat it rough (no bmw or benz or porsche)
Must be at least a mid size SUV. (X3 RX300 too small)

From all that, I think you should look at the Infiniti FX35. Its not as luxurious as BEnz or BMW, its 50 grand. Its very reliable, not too small (rear trunk space is a little limited, but its bigger than a highlander). It has fairly well offroading capabilities, I've heard stories of it out gunning X5, cayenne and ML off road.

And it has good power for the money. 280hp.

The only other thing is styling, its not for some people. But I think you should check it out. Its a very reasonable all around car.

gamite, i thought they were a little smaller then the highlander, but i could be wrong, im going to go and check out the fx tonight then, ill give it a shot, thanks for the input,, Mike

If your going for the Highlander- go for the HYBRID! More power than the regular 3.3 and eats less fuel. It's the same engine as the 400h. You get like 250lb-ft torque at 1rpm!! And it's on sale now in Canada.

I lived in Eastern Africa for between 1998 - 2001 and have had many fequent visits after moving back to Canada, while there I did a lot of off roading (mostly not by choice) and driven many 4x4's. So far I havent driven many 4x4's that could handle those roads mostly the Japanese trucks couldent handle it. I had a great experiance with:

1 - Mercedes G class (goes anywhere)
2 - Hummer H1 (also goes anywhere)
3 - Land Rover Defender 108, 109, 110 (almost goes anywhere)
4 - Mitsubishi Montero (Very very suprised took a huge beating and kept going)
5 - Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 5 & 6 (I know not SUV's but impresive either way)
6 - Subaru Impreza and Forester (Dont like the cars but are nice off road)

Toyota (had major problems with welds breaking on chassis on many SUV's and pick-ups)
Nissan (had a many Diff problems with the exception of 1 SUV but it isnt available in the North and South America and Europe)
Honda (simply to small and not enough ground clearance but pretty reliable)
Ford (broken way to many axles)
GM's (Way to much on Gas with the SUV's worth while getting)

Again these are my experiances with SUV's and only my opinion, but I hope this helps.

thanks guys, im trying to narrow my choices, right now its either the fx45, or the highlander, i know they are like two different playing fields, but they are the two that offer the most room in a mid size SUV...

FX45..that interior is hot...the truck really is a well designed piece of art..smooth as silk and from what I heard and seen during winter it really runs great in deep snow.
