The MDX is a unibody soft-roader. Unsuitable for hard off roading. It normally runs in FWD until the rear wheels detect slip. The there is no low range and the diffs would only stay locked up to a certain speed (like 20km/h). And it runs the Minivan engine???

The X5 and Cayenne are not intended for off-roading for the same reasons- unibody- light duty 4WD systems with no low-range.

The Land Rovers do well off road- but who wants to take their $100,000 vehicle off road?? Spend the same amount of money on a 4Runner and you'll have a rock crawling beast. Also look at the available 4.7L V8- the same one used in the Sequoia, and Lexus GX, LX470. BTW, the GX is based on the 4Runner platform.

Cayenne's hold their value like crazy (smaller engine more so then the v8, turbo) If you are going to buy a 6cylinder you may as well buy it new. The reason for this is because a lot of them are being shipped overseas. they can't ship a new one and send it directly over ( not sure why) so the rich guys come over here and buy up all the used ones drivign the market price up.

Anyways you already said No but thought you might be interested

Vw's Toureg and Cayenne is 90% Identicle body wise. Jointly built together.
Engine, Suspension, & interior are pretty much the only things different between the two. & well Hands Down Toureg best bang for your buck SUV wise.

either the 4 runner or the mdx, both are reliable, and have 3rd row seating.

I read through your post, and this is what I got.

You want a car under 60 grand
It has to have some offroading capabilities, but not to the extent of a hummer
You want a car that is not refined luxury because you need to junk it around a bit (kids)
You don't want expensive repair costs because u'll treat it rough (no bmw or benz or porsche)
Must be at least a mid size SUV. (X3 RX300 too small)

From all that, I think you should look at the Infiniti FX35. Its not as luxurious as BEnz or BMW, its 50 grand. Its very reliable, not too small (rear trunk space is a little limited, but its bigger than a highlander). It has fairly well offroading capabilities, I've heard stories of it out gunning X5, cayenne and ML off road.

And it has good power for the money. 280hp.

The only other thing is styling, its not for some people. But I think you should check it out. Its a very reasonable all around car.

FX is def a nice car, and its not slow either. My dad was seriously contemplating getting one but opted for the S4 instead. If you look hard enough there are BRAND NEW 2004's still around.
