I think it depends, remember you get a $2000 cashback from the government if you buy a hybrid. Although it is around 8k more expensive than the base gasoline civic.

2006 Civic Hybrid starts at $28,300 CDN.
Federal government gives a taxable $2000 "Clean Fuel Tax Deduction"
Gas mileage is 49mpg city, 51mpg highway.
Still uses regular unleaded fuel, no need to find diesel.

Compared to a 2002 gasoline civic using 22mpg city, and 31mpg highway.
Compared to a 2002 540i manual gas milegae of 15mpg city and 23mpg highway.

Compared to the gasoline SI you are spending 56% less on gasoline. For every $1000 on gas from the regular civic, you are only paying $440.

Compared to the 540i, the full sized hybrid civic sedan will give a 70% savings in gasoline. For every $1000 you spend on gas with the 540, only $300 will be spent on the hybrid.

Personally, I spend a couple grand per year easily on gas. Mind you, you're not going to run the hybrid on the track or anything... but saving that kinda money feels good. And no more bitching and complaining when gas prices skyrocket.

when I bought my 540 over 2 years ago my mom said the same thing, "why don't you buy a new Civic" I laughed & told her that I don't feel comfortable in a cheaper car, I wanted something with power & a decent interior

not knowing what your finacial situation is, if you have somewhat have a tight budget you definitely should be looking at the Civic, but if you want something fancy & want to pimp around in a nice ride get the 540, but just keep some extra cash lying around just in case for some repairs

that's pretty arrogant coming from someone with a 20yr old shitbox bmw... i'd rather take a civic over your car. just because it's a bmw doesn't mean its the best thing ever.

and do you really think bmw's dont rust.. that 'in 10 years' comment is stupid.. these canadian winters + salt will kill any car.. I'm pretty sure if he's looking to buy a 2000+ vehicle.. he'll more than likely stay in new vehicles all the time.. so 10 years from now is irrelevant.

civic for sure, its resale value will only get better with the steady rise in gas prices, not to mention the fact that it has improved significantly from the previous Gen. its not "just" a civic anymore, its actually a car ppl WANT to buy now, rather than HAVE to buy

civic is definitely the smarter choice

The manual 540 is a six speed also. It's tough to compare these cars and all the advice above make sense. I'm certain the 540 will be a better overall DRIVING experience. Consider this scene....

You buy your Civic, it's one month old, it's broken in, you're kickin it..WOT....then I come up from behind, and smoke you like you're standing still. You can't even catch me on the twisty roads where the Civic "may be" stronger. What will be going through your mind at that time? "I could have got one of those?"

I was considering a Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon instead of the 540. That's when I came up with that BS. I've always wanted a 540, but I only thought of the 850 (or Civic in your case) for practical reasons. It did it for me.

BTW - BMW labour is deadly. Parts are reasonable - Comparable parts for my Odyssey are more costly. If you work on your car yourself, the costs are quite reasonable (Honda has a warranty though).

I get the Civic but in that price range there are alot of choices..your close to a entry level Acura or upper end Mazda or even a base level new Passatt which I think looks sweet...

If you buy your 540 from the bmw dealer, it should have warranty untill 120k or 2008 year , 2002 + 6 = 2008. Now if it is a beat up 540 scratch my info. To me facelifted E39 is one of the best looking bimmers and very classy.

I would rather walk then drive a civic.

Take a look at 1995 civic and 1995 bmw 540. Most civic are very rusty under the body if you take all the parts out. Also E34 540S are mad fast and fun to drive other then 10 year old civic.YOu get what you pay for .

Not the best thing to insult bmw owners on bmw board. What ever floats your boat.
