race with MR2 turbo

I don't like to race on the street but we were on a long open road and it was clear for at least a mile or two (still daylight) and it was NOT in a residential area. The guy in the MR2 drove up next to me (I've got a 97 328is) and was cool. He liked my car and gave the thumbs up. Anyways, we were going around 65km/hr and we agreed to a short race. I really don't know much about those cars so I kept my car in third and I heard him down shift (I guess into second). That was my first mistake. He instantly got one car length on me; however, my car would'nt let him get any farther ahead after about a 1/4 mile distance. We let off and met up later down the road. He was impressed with my torque and he knew I didn't down shift. He explained that he's got "leaky turbo's" but I don't know. It seemed as though the cars were pretty evenly matched (would have been nice if I actually down shifted to start!).

Does anybody else have an experience with a turbo MR2?
